The app is able to play both internet streams (64kbps, consuming about 29MB/hour of data) as well as local FM broadcasts (no data consumption other than for track metadata). Windows Phone 8.1 and compatible hardware is needed for FM radio. The app can also show local AM frequencies, although you can't play these stations on your phone.
